Santa Marija — Feast of the Assumption (Malta)
The Assumption of Our Lady (15 August), known locally as Santa Marija, is Malta's biggest summer feast and a national public holiday, celebrated in seven parishes across Malta and Gozo. The headline fireworks displays — including Mqabba's world-champion pyrotechnics — light up the sky on the eve of 14 August.

What to expect
- Malta's biggest summer feast, in seven parishes at once
- World-champion fireworks in Mqabba on the eve (14 August)
- Church processions, band marches and street celebrations
- National public holiday in the middle of the high season
Planning tips
- Go to Mqabba or Qrendi on the night of 14 August for the best fireworks
- Book transport and tables early — it is peak summer-feast weekend
- Many Maltese head to the beach, so roads and ferries are busy
Build a day around it
Valletta events work best when the day stays low-effort: one event block, one food stop, and one slow walk for the harbour light — with buffer. Keep it simple and the city feels more beautiful.
- If you have 2–3 hours: arrive early → event → short waterfront/viewpoint loop.
- If you’re making a full day: one landmark block + event + a calm dinner plan.
- If the weather turns: keep walking minimal and use cafés/museums as your buffer.
Before you go
- Confirm the details: check the official link for last-minute schedule or venue updates.
- Arrive with buffer: 15–30 minutes early usually makes the whole experience calmer.
- Have a weather plan: keep one indoor “warm stop” in mind in case the day turns.
